Rare, antique drummer’s flag, French Foreign Legion
‘Legio Patria Nostra’
The march of the Foreign Legion:
In 1830, the Hohenlohe Regiment, the forerunner of the Foreign Legion, marched at a slow pace. It is probably this tradition that has been preserved by the Legion, the rate having been set at 88 steps per minute.
The drummer also has the characteristic of wearing the drum low, the lower circle being at knee-height. This way of carrying it facilitates the slow pace of the steps. The drums bear the inscription ‘Legio Patria Nostra’, (the Legion is our Homeland).
