Shan Knife with a tubular handle in bone. Its blade, made of steel, is in good condition. Wooden sheath with rattan ties surrounded by metal thread.
Beautiful work of sculpture in the handle in buffalo bone, representing two overlapping demons, work more complex than it seems because done entirely by hand with rudimentary tools.
Total length, 35 cm, mid-20th century.
Please note: Most of the photos were taken with artificial lighting, the natural colour is clearer, see the second photo taken with natural lighting.
TRAVEL DIARY OF JEAN DUMOULIN
This type of knife was found throughout the Golden Triangle and was an important symbol of the social status of the man who wore it, especially when carved like this, see photos from the book "Peoples of the Golden Triangle". These knives were crafted by Shan or Chinese craftsmen.
This knife is in very nice condition even if it bears traces of its age, small cracks in the handle, without affecting the solidity, see photos.
It will be carefully packaged and sent by insured mail with track & trace via Bpost.
