Dimensions include the polished granite base.

These bronze, black patinated, female figures refer to the nymph Daphne from Greek mythology. Daphne fled the love of Apollo who loved her horribly and refused to let go.

The hunter’s desire for freedom clashed with Apollo’s obsessive desire. He kept chasing her everywhere.

Daphne’s escape from this oppressive love hunt paradoxically drives her to her death. When her powers run out and she calls her father Peneius for help, this river god transforms her into a laurel tree. Now she is forever ‘free’ of her enticing beauty.

With this combination in which two editions (4/8 + 5/8) of the single bronze statue ‘Daphne’ are facing each other, Van den Born shows that flights rarely make sense. You always run into yourself and man is irrevocably connected to his fate, like twin souls in the same mother’s womb.
