Extraordinary old silver tribal anklet, from Gujarat, India. It is a hollow two-part anklet worn by Maldhari women and others. They are worn in pairs, one on each ankle. It can be worn as a bracelet.
A masterpiece of repoussage and chasing, the design represents two addorsed, highly stylized Makara heads.
There's a similar pair at Victoria and Albert Museum (London). They describe these anklets as ceremonial and state that these enormously heavy anklets may never have been intended for wear.
The deep repoussé of the design indicates that this piece is 19th Century.
