C. Vibius C.f. Pansa, 90 BC. AR, denarius (16-19mm, 3.81g, 9h), Rome mint
Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right; uncertain symbol (branch?) below chin
Rev: Minerva driving galloping quadriga right, holding trophy, reins, and spear
Ref: Crawford 342/5a; Sydenham 684
Note: unusually fine style portrait for this type from the period of the Social Wars or Marsic War from 91 to 87 BC between the Roman Republic and tribes in Italy which as allies (socii) of Rome wanted Roman citizenship and the right to vote. The war ended with Rome granting citizenship to tribes that did not fight against Rome with the Lex Julia - mainly to prevent others from joining against Rome.
