First raised in 52 BC by Caesar in Gaul, legion V Alaudae fought with him at Pharsalus, Thapsus, and Munda. Antony reconstituted in 44 BC with Caesar's death, and the legion fought for Antony at Mutina and Philippi. After Actium, Octavian's reorganized the army, and Legion V served him in Spain and along the Rhine. This coin issued the year before the decisive battle between Octavian and Mark Anthony, September 2, 31 BC, that led to the death of Antony and Cleopatra, Octavian's sole rule and the formation of the Roman Empire.
