Set of 2 woodcuts: "Papegaaien" and "Cosmogonie", published in 1925 as 250 copies by the Antwerp printer and publisher J.E. Buschmann, all numbered and signed by the artist. This is number 40/250.
Victor Delhez (Antwerp, 1902 – Argentina, 1985) is considered one of the most important woodcarvers of abstract Modernism in Belgium. As a great friend of Michel Seuphor and Jozef Peeters, he started with expressionist engravings which were published in the first issues of Het Overzicht. Around 1923, he evolved into abstract work, but continued his oeuvre since his departure to Argentina in 1925 in a magically realistic style.
Delhez remains popular. The Chilean sculptor Lorenzo Domínguez made a marble bust with his face. In 2014, Pope Francis used one of Delhez's woodcuts as an illustration for the official Vatican Christmas card.
