Impressive old handpainted hanging scroll depicting two Samurai warriors taking care of a child
Japan, ca. 1920
Shogunate Tsunayoshi Tokugawa issued the Orders on Compassion for Living Things in 1687. The codes state among other things that when an abandoned child is found, someone in the vicinity should first take care of the child, and nurture the child to prevent starvation
or put the child up for adoption if someone is willing to adopt the child.
