Large Burmese drum consisting of a dense and heavy wooden shell and two skins stretched on both sides. Sides adorned with leather strips.
It is 57 cm high with a diameter of 41 cm on one side, 32 cm on the other side.
Circa mid 20th century. Purchased in situ in Rangoon.
The Burmese orchestra aka ‘Saing Waing’ is composed of various instruments (drums, cymbals, wind instruments, gongs) including this instrument, it is a ‘Padma’, large double-sided drum.
These orchestras accompany all traditional shows as well as celebrations such as weddings.
Object in working order but also very decorative and very stable, which may be used as a small table.
