The crucifixion of Saint Peter,
Very large engraving: 578 mm x 385 mm.
After a painting of Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) painted in 1638. The painting is returned to the St Peter's Church in Cologne, run by the Jesuits. Rubens was baptized in this church. The Crucifixion of St Peter was commissioned for it in 1638.
Engraved in the same way as the painting by Ernst Carl Gottlieb Thelott (1760-1834). He was a German engraver who worked in England and after 1800 in Dusseldorf. This engraving was made at the moment when the painting was returned to its church. This is one of his very best engravings. He was the engraver of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia (Germany).
Dedicated with the inscription that King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia returned the painting to the church in Cologne.
In good condition, very good dark impression of this very rare large engraving.
Printed on early 19th century paper, with large margins 1.5 cm - 3 cm.
Some traces of aging and old tape, but not disturbing
Very good quality engraving in the same way as the painting, This means that Ernst Thelott had to engrave it in reverse, this is more difficult.
