Ifé is an ancient royal city of the Yoruba in Nigeria, located at the border with Benin, its apogee was reached between the 11th and the 15th centuries. It is known for its creation of king (oni) heads in bronze or terracotta, represented with realistic dimensions and features, which is quite unusual in Africa, raising questions among the first Europeans to discover these pieces. These heads were placed on the summit of wooden figurines and were dressed in their attire for commemorative funerary ceremonies, held to celebrate deceased kings, and were then buried near the royal palace.
