Royal Leopard Head in Bronze - BINI EDO - Nigeria
This zoomorphic head refers to rich symbolism associated to the leopard, king of the bush. Furthermore, it embodies the qualities an Oba much incarnate. Within the Kingdom of Benin, the execution of the king of animals was associated to legends, the leopard was the privilege of the chief, the Oba. The feline could then be used as an offering for the worship of the chief’s head. Sometimes tamed by various royal guilds, the chief would bring it with him for his travels. The Oba, named “child of the leopard of the house” could also offer teeth or skin to commanders whose loyalty was evident.
