Stool named “Mma Gwa”
Ashanti Culture, Ghana.
First half of the 20th century.
Height: 25.5 cm; Width: 41 cm; Depth: 23 cm.
The seat of this stool is slightly curved on its extremities, it lays on four indented pillars, framing a central column with an open-worked cross-pattern decoration. The flat base is in a rectangular form.
Mma Gwa stools have the particularity of being stools offered by young grooms to their newly married wives.
This small piece of furniture also served as an offerings’ altar, on the occasion of funerals.
