Horses are rare and therefore quite expensive in the Dogon society. They represent power and wealth. Often these statues stand in the hut of the village´s oldest. The rider was cast using the lost-wax-technique, so every statue is unique in its kind.
The Dogon people live in the Bandiagara Cliffs in the centre of the country. They are known for the rich cultural heritage. Their art often shows agricultural symbols or respect for the elder people.
