This stipple etching was made by Johan Jacob Bijlaert (1734-1809)
Draughtsman, engraver and writer, living in Rotterdam. One of the pioneers of stipple engraving, which he is said to have practiced from c.1760.
Signed bottom right: Paulus Potter Fecit.
Signed and datedon the backside in the handwriting of Bijlaert:
'Door J.J. Bijlaert, in t'koper gewerkt naar Paulus Potter 1777.'
The Potter drawing as then in the collection of Baron van Leyden, and is now in the Rijksmuseum.
Bylaert's experiments in new methods of reproducing drawings must be linked with those of Ploos van Amstel, after whose drawings he made several plates.
Remains of album tipping at the backside of the top corners. Small closed tear in top right margin.
