DESCRIPTION

Set consisting of two lacquered objects, a betel box and a simple box.

The cylindrical betel box called Kun It, is a traditional model popular in Burma for centuries.

The drawings depict stylised characters, animals and trees. The drawings were done freehand with a rudimentary tool, a very sharp stiletto called tont yun, giving its name to the used technique. Beautiful work, the box and its lower plates were completely decorated. The top and bottom are decorated with a peacock, the symbol bird of Burma. The 1950s-1960s.

The main box is used to contain betel leaves, the lower part of the two internal plates contained tobacco leaves, whereas the top plate contained spices, lime and pieces of areca nuts.

The small box is newer, it was probably intended to hold cosmetics, it has a diameter of 9 cms for a height of 5 cms.

These objects were crafted in Bagan, but were destined for export and come from Bangkok.
