Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎 ), is a painter, draftsman and engraver specialising in ukiyo-e, as well as author of popular Japanese writings mostly known under the name of Hokusai (北斎?), or his nickname ‘the old man mad about art’.
Born on the first day of the sexagesimal cycle of the ninth month of the metal-elder-dragon year of the Hōreki era - probably in October 1760, in Edo (now Tokyo) - and died on the morning of the 18th day of the 4th month of the Kaei era, year II - April or May 1849, in the same city.
His work influenced many European artists, in particular Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and more widely the artistic movement called Japanism. He sometimes signed his works, from 1800, with the phrase Gakyōjin, ‘The Old Man Mad About Art’. In 1814 he published his Manga containing a collection of sketches and drawings. The Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (1831–1833) actually containing 46 prints and the Great Wave of Kanagawa (1831) are his most famous works. The cover of the score of La Mer (1905) by Claude Debussy reproduces in particular The Wave by Hokusai. The Japanese painter left a legacy of over 30,000 drawings.
