Gorgeous collection of 105 plates of Cochois and Norman costumes in period colours, drawn by Louis-Marie Lanté and Benoît Pécheux and engraved by Georges-Jacques Gatine - to which a title-frontispiece based on Lanté is added, also coloured. The explanation of the plates is the work of Pierre-Antoine Leboux de la Mésangère, director of the Journal des Dames et des Modes (the first 11 plates had been published in 1814 under the title Costumes Féminins inédits du pays de Caux).
Remarkable creation for the quality of its engravings and especially the freshness of its colours. Very beautiful print, the first edition of the book was dated 1827 (by the publisher), our copy is undated, with the address of A. Eudes [circa 1855].
Pécheux, renowned painter, specialist in Italian frescoes (he was born in Rome) [...] called to Limpiville, Fécamp and Le Havre. Sundays and holidays, he rubbed shoulders with Cauchoises wearing original headdresses and drew them before going home to Paris. La Mésangère, who headed the Journal des Dames et des Modes in the capital, in turn sent an artist to do a more complete account: it was Lanté who, in 1819, stayed in Caux [...] to put the original details of the costume down on paper.
One folio volume with 10 pages of text (explanation of the engravings), followed by 105 plates mounted on tabs.
Red half morocco with corners, double gold bands, spine adorned with small stamps.
In very good condition. Well preserved plates. Binding in good condition, lightly rubbed.
