The letters and numbers in this alphabet are experimental in nature. In order to realise a new method of typesetting, they consist exclusively of horizontals and verticals. Wim Crouwel of Total Design NV felt that the current techniques needed a new impulse. For five full years - from 1962 to 1967 - he worked on it, calculating, drawing, measuring - and measuring is knowing; with trial and error the letters were created. “I didn't want to make a fool of myself,” he said about that long run. The alphabet was also intended to spark a discussion with colleagues.
In response to this clinical alphabet by Crouwel (1928-2020), Anthon Beeke created his own voluptuous Nude Alphabet as an antipode. This is currently also offered on Catawiki as “Ed van der Elsken, Anthon Beeke & Geert Kooiman - Naakt Alfabet / Kwadraatblad - 1970/1970.”
