Biiga Dolls - Mossi - Burkina Faso
These pieces are the representation of feminine beauty and are created to be the privileged receptacle of the immortal substance which will enable a new birth.
This object, transmitted from mother to daughter, conveys complex symbolism. Jealously kept by the young wife, this object will then become the toy of the little girl, which behaviour will be closely supervised by an omnipresent feminine circle: neglecting the “doll” is neglecting her own person and the one of the baby who she will, in turn, give birth to, and whose birth will be closely related to the object’s virtue, sheltering a new Siiga.
The Biiga symbolises a reality which aims to replace the child, to precede him/her over the years: it is at the same time the support material of the immortal substance of an ancestor; of the active and impersonal fraction of a tiny bit of this substance held by the child; of the new immortal substance which will enable the future birth.
We could almost say that the Biiga seems to have been created to reinforce the hidden dream of every Mooga woman: the transmission of a part of the ancestral substance of the “mythical mother”, Yenenga.
