Sujatno Koempoel painted like a madman. The Indonesian painter's production was so enormous that he was not given much artistic merit. Nevertheless, in 2003, a thick monography was published about him ("Koempoel Sujatno, the maestro, 1912-1987; tracing the old historical city of Surabaia"). The book contains illustrations of 2500 of his pieces, including very good paintings. In Indonesia, the work is appreciated for its historical and topographic quality; the enormous body of work gives an extensive and eloquent picture of the tempoe doeloe. Koempoel, pupil of ‘Mooi Indië’ painter Ger Adolfs, has been rehabilitated with this book.
