Provenance: private collection, Portugal.
Dimensions: 29 cm
Materials: wood, cord.
Feminine Chokwe mask. The teeth are sharpened. In several ethnic groups, the teeth were sharpened. To do so, the person would bite a piece of wood and someone would cut the enamel with a knife, for an aesthetic purpose.
This mask was exclusively worn by a man miming the gait of a beautiful young woman. Well-preserved headdress in cord. Very lovely patina.
