An exceptional Buddha worshipper in carved and lacquered wood, gold leaf gilding, coloured glass inserts. Mandalay period, late 19th century. Of large size, very high quality craftsmanship, the face is of great finesse. The base is not original and was added later. The given measurements are without the base, 20 x 23.5 cm with the base.
These statuettes are offered by worshippers and are placed in temples and monasteries, near the statue of Buddha, to pay tribute to him, as the position of the hands indicates.
Travel diary of Jean Dumoulin.
I started buying these statuettes during my first stay in 1996 and since then, every trip, they keep them for me and I continue buying them... Unfortunately, finding beautiful ones and of good quality is becoming more and more difficult. This one was purchased in 2017 in Rangoon.
In excellent condition for a piece from this period, there is a crack in the lacquer on the right leg and the right hand which does not affect its sturdiness, see pictures.
