Robert Landois, Parisian by birth, leaves the city of light around 1950 to become head of the museums at the Antwerp Zoo. Landois, who, in his home country assisted with the restoration of the Palace of Versailles, found creative indulgence in Antwerp, designing among others two remarkable posters.
This is an impressive king penguin standing up high on its legs, flanked by a younger penguin, which stresses the impressive nature of the parental animal. Note also the stylised ice mass in the background in shades of blue. As a poster, it is an example of graphic expressiveness (quote page 13 from: 'Kom nog eens af' - '150 jaar affiches voor de Zoo', exhibition catalogue for the eponymous expo in 1993 in the former museum of the Zoo.)
