Statuetta/e - Legno - Female figure - Luba - Repubblica Democratica del Congo

Statuetta/e - Legno - Female figure - Luba - Repubblica Democratica del Congo
metà del XX secolo

This item is from a private collection.

Available for auction there is a female figure, from the Luba people of Congo DRC.

Figure of a woman with a remarkable patina, with nice balance of the features.
The favourite theme in sculpture was the woman since, according to the Luba myth, vilie was the first woman spirit, founder of the clan and granter of fertility and lineage.
Women were cult guardians, and the royal wives played an important role: sent as emissaries to the chiefs of neighbouring ethnicities, they would contract profitable political alliances based on marriage.
With her hands placed on her chest, she represents future maternity.
Beautiful scarification marks present.

Carved in only one piece of wood, on a circular base.
It has a visible crack on the back of the figure, due to age.

Luba, M-N Roberts, 5 Continents, 2007.
Trésors d'Afrique, Tervuren Museum, 1995.

This item will be carefully packed with track and trace.
