Available for auction there is a male power figure, from the Bembe people of Congo DRC.
The function of Bembe art is said to be primarily concerned with contacting ancestors and seeking their assistance, which relates in general terms with other accounts testifying to use of figures to endow hunters and warriors with good fortune before combat or hunting expeditions.
Bone segments in the eye orbits. It seems that the Bembe depicted ancestors in this way to show them respect by much oiling and handling their idealized representations so as to make sure that their spirits would support the living.
