Commentary edition of the Maximes de La Rochefoucauld given by Nicolas Amelot de La Houssaye “Mises en nouvel ordre avec des Notes Politiques, & Historiques”.
The success of the maxims of La Rochefoucauld as they are commonly called was very large as soon as they are published in 1665.
It was in Mme de Sablé's salon that these maxims circulated to be read and approved by the elite of the great literary era. The Marquise de Sévigné, Count de Bussy-Rabutin, the Prince de Conti and many others had a front row seat at these readings. La Rochefoucauld, however, was not lenient towards anyone and all the greats of the Kingdom of France could easily find themselves reflected in these dazzling features.
Everyone from the Grand Siècle ended up reading the Maximes de La Rochefoucauld, and its echo has spread to the 21st century. This is one of the major works of French literature.
