The actual name of the paintings signed by Herkelman is
Scholte, Leonardus A.J., born 11th April 1945 in Schiedam. Lived in the old Schiedam
and in the old centre of Vlaardingen, but for many years now
he was living and working in the restful Gaasterland in Friesland,
amidst the medieval towns of Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, etc.

As a boy of thirteen, he regularly went out with his homemade canoe,
through ditches and canals, right through the polders, watercolour book and paint at the ready.
So colourful paintings could be made of landscape along the way,
featuring water, skies and old farms.
Most of the work was sold immediately to bystanders or residents,
mainly in Kethel and Overschie. With the proceeds of the works sold
he could buy more paper, paint and brushes.

Around the age of fourteen he discovered the properties of oil paint and soon
small landscapes are sold through trade.
In 1962, he was admitted to the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam,
where he was particularly proficient in drawing and painting still lifes and models.

In 1983 he was chosen as best Dutch painter by Herman Krikhaar, Mr. Hesterman
(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), and Carel Willink.
Herkelman likes the traditional Dutch subjects. The love of youth has always remained,
the truly Dutch polder landscapes, the old Dutch farms,
the ditches and canals with the willows, winter landscapes
with ice-skating figures and catering tents with a mill or church on the horizon.

According to the gallery owners, who sell his work, it is not just the romantic style,
which appeals to art connoisseurs and enthusiasts, but also mainly the quality
and the craftsmanship according to the best Dutch tradition, and for that reason
his pieces were popular at home and abroad.
