A Luristan Master of Animals idol sceptre standard finial. A tube in anthropomorphic form, worked on both sides identically, showing a human with a long nose and jutting ears, arms grasping the necks of two flanking animals. With baluster-shaped support. High quality example, finely cast and with great patina. Custom stand. The Master of Animals was a supernatural being, highly respected as a protector of game, the ruler of the forest, and the guardian of the animal kingdom. We see a human figure standing between the heads, necks, and stylized bodies of demonic creatures presented in profile. The figure grasps the animals in what some have seen as an image of control. Suggestions for their interpretation have ranged from the religious (depictions of deities, idols, talismans), to the utilitarian (adornments for chariots, articles used in funerary rituals). Luristan. ca 8th Century B.C.
