Original woodblock print triptych - Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865) - Performance of the kabuki play "Meiyo jinsei roku" 名誉仁政録 - Japan - 1852 (Kaei 5), 7th month
Image of a scene from the kabuki-e theatre play "Meiyo jinsei roku" 名誉仁政録 with actor Sawamura Chōjūro V as daimyo Aoto Fujitsuna 青砥藤綱
Interesting kabuki scene of an audience with the daimyo Aoto Fujitsuna, who sits on a cushion at top center, a page holding his sword behind him. At bottom center, the widow Okon looks up with a distraught expression, while the boy across from her scratches his head in a puzzled manner. Most of the other members of the audience bow respectfully with their hands on the ground before them, except for the two men at left. The fellow in the blue robe scowls angrily, while the samurai above looks up with a worried frown. Nice expressive figures, with nice detail in the architectural setting.
