This early triptych by Kuniyoshi shows an episode from the play 'Ehon Gappo Tsuji', a dramatisation of a popular novel of the time about a revenge at a place called the Crossroads of Gappo. The plot is concerned with the recovery of a family heirloom and the revenge for a cowardly murder. This scene is the final fight taking place at Enma Daio Temple. The facial facial expressions the characters are all unique and their body movements carefully structured, a feature of Kuniyoshi's work for the rest of his artistic life.
