Half-length portraits of warriors or actors spread boldly across all three sheets of a triptych and forming one image were becoming very popular by the end of the Edo Period. In this print, Kunimaro depicts the samurai warrior in great detail, with special attention paid to his armour. He wears a jinbaori, a short coat without sleeves, which a high-ranking samurai wore over his armour. The coat is decorated with a dragon, highly regarded as symbols of an unwavering spirit and wisdom.
