The parody of a man and six courtesans' daimyo parade comes from Eiri's witty imagination and is based on 'A Journey to the East' from the 'Tale of Ise', a Heian period classic of Japanese literature. In the tale, the protagonist Narihira has lost all will to continue his worldly life in the capital and leaves home with one or two close friends in search of a peaceful existence in the eastern provinces. The moment when he passes the foot of Mount Fuji is frequently depicted in Japanese art.
