The lady depicted here is an okujochū, a maid of a feudal lord's concubine. She is looking over a veranda at something that causes her amusement. Her shaved eyebrows and blackened teeth indicate that she is already married. She wears green lipstick on her bottom lip, a fashion of the time, showing that she is a wealthy young woman. Her hairstyle, elegant and unadorned, is done in a manner that resembles a ginkgo leaf.
