In the 19th century, the novel 'A Rustic Genji by a Fraudulent Murasaki' (Nise Murasaki inaka Genji) by Ryūtei Tanehiko (1783-1842), gave rise to a completely new genre in Japanese printing: the Genji-e (Genji pictures).
It was published as a series between 1829 and 1842. The story charts the experiences of womaniser Prince Mitsuuji.
Tanehiko based his Genji on the 11th-century novel, 'The Tale of Genji'. The text was illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865).
The series achieved an enormous commercial success.
