GABON's KWELE ethnic group
49 cm high
Sold with stand.
Intact, part of the upper right tip is missing.
ORIGIN: acquired in a gallery specialised in authentic African art in Paris.
The "mandjong" of the Kwele people is possibly the most unique piece of ancient African coins. The old pieces, known as "zong", showed a heart-shaped form.
After the arrival of colonisers, native blacksmiths changed its form, giving an aspect similar to the anchor of a ship ("mandjong"), most recognisable element under the new colonial situation to which these peoples were subjected.
