Hand-carved wooden board with natural pigments from the Pende people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It depicts the initiation figure of a woman.

The board is carved in one piece if it is made of wood. The woman, also made of wood, has a red patina.

Depicted in relief and equipped with a hat and a cord in the hip, on a triangular geometric background. Figure with extensive reddish paint in several layers, traces of light pigments throughout the front of the board.

This form of figurative boards served as prestige and commemorative representations of the ancestors of the clan chief. This board was installed in front of the entrance to the chief's cabin.

The Pende carve numerous types of masks, most of which are associated with education and initiation rituals. Wooden figures are sculpted in the northwestern part of the territory. Leaders and other important people use carved stools, canes, chairs, and swords to express their power.
