'Ntchak' (Ntshak) Vestito - Raffia - Kuba - Repubblica Democratica del Congo
Seconda metà XX secolo - Buone condizioni

These textiles were used as wraparound skirts; as prestige objects and as the most important part of the dowry. Ntchaks are made of raffia of the raffia-palm tree. It is tough and hard to work with material that first has to be soaked for weeks. then it has to be kneaded in order to soften the threads. This lengthy process, as well as the weaving was done by men - whereas the embroidery and other sorts of embellishments were done by women. The process of making a Ntchak of this size could take months!

Provenance: I purchased it myself in Mweka (2014) while on a tour.

Literature: Art Royal Kuba - Joseph Cornet .f.s.c.

Registered shipment with track and trace.
