Grandi e pesanti statue del tempio di Barong Landung (2) - Legno - Jero Gede en Jero Luh - Bali, Indonesia
Prima metà XX secolo - Condizioni discrete

Two rare ancient Barong Landung temple statues.
There are many centuries old legends about the origins of Barong Landung.
The figurines are said to be of King Sri Jaya Pangus and his wife the Chinese princess Kang Wei Cing.
They were cursed by Dewi Danu at Mount Batur and disappeared forever.

The black male figurine is called Jero Gede, the female is called Jero Luh. The figurines which are also a symbol of ancestors, are considered important and sacred in Bali. They offer protection from evil spirits and diseases.
With Galungan, often in even larger form, they are carried along in ceremonial processions in and around the village.

Jero Gede has the outer characteristics of the famous Balinese Barong but with more human features.

These very old figurines come from the Bangli area and weigh largely 4 - 4,5 kg each.
