Scultura (1) - Legno - Moai - Rapa Nui - Isola di Pasqua
Seconda metà XX secolo

Original Moai figure from Easter Island made of beautifully banded wood, possibly toromiro wood. Around 1960/65. Weight: 156 grams Authentic, exquisite and precisely crafted Moai figure. The figure was acquired on a sea voyage before the airport was opened; it stands out with its elegant lines and high quality. Whilst Thor Heyerdahl, who researched the early history of the islands in the 50s and 60s, disregarded contemporary production, these pieces today, are looked at in a new light, for with them, the cultural survival of the island was secured, and a modern, contemporary art production jump-started. While the large stone Moais were used for the ancestor cult, the small wooden figures are more in the tiki tradition of Polynesia, where they are used as lucky charms. Rare Easter Island / rapa nui carved stone sculpture, circa 1960/65.
