Double Mambila Figurine, Nigeria
Height: 28 cm
Weight: 1055 grams.
Two masculine-feminine figures, back to back, upside-down.
Relatively heavy wood. Massive piece of rare power and force, compared to the blandness of recent Mambila creations. Crouching, the legs bent, ready to relax, this statuette expresses a dynamism uncommon for Mambila creations, which are already very expressive in general. Some raw matter seems to emerge from the inanimate, we are witnessing the birth of an animated being.
The wear and abrasions on the surface, the lacks, the cracks and the losses are due to the type of wood, the age, the use, the preservation method and place of the object, as well as the climatic conditions of the region.
Clearly, this figurine must be part of a mysterious gemellary cult or refer to a couple of origin, symbolising both conflict and fusion, all of the binary aspects of the world, whether these are divine or human, visible or invisible. Reference to the mythical origins of the universe?
