Okuyi Anthropomorphic Mask of the Punu culture, south of Gabon
Punu masks represent idealised feminine ancestors. The white colour of the mask is genderless; white is a symbol for peace, the gods, the spirits of the deceased and the hereafter.
It presents features of apparent tranquility. The oval face is pigmented with white - with the help of kaolin. The eyes consist in thin incisions in half-moons, topped by coloured eyebrows. The nose is thin, the ears in relief are carved on the temples. The hairdo is polylobed and incised with thin striations, referring to the braided hair of the Punu. It presents diamond-shaped scarifications painted in black.
Good condition. Traces of wear, desiccation cracks.
