Balinese Barong Asu (Dog) mask – 1st half 20th century - Badung, Bali, Indonesia.

This old Barong Asu mask is carved with great detail and beautifully painted. It represents a Barong Asu (dog) out.

This mask was used in Bali, Indonesia during Barong Bangkung dances.

Barong Asu portrays Barong in the shape of the dog. Barong Asu is catalogued as a rare Barong. It only occurs in some villages in Tabanan and Badung.

This Barong is used by two dancers, as head and tail.

The Barong Asu only takes to the stage during special occasions and is accompanied by Gamelan Batel, Tetamburan or Belenganjur.

The Asu is designed with great detail, the pointed ears, impressive teeth, red tongue and ferocious eyes make this mask with beautiful polychrome colours a rare whole.
