Goldsmith (1763-1846) was a Briton with initially French sympathies. In 1802 he moved to Paris and was appointed by Napoleon as editor-in-chief of the English-language magazine Argus, which wrote from a French perspective. In 1809, disillusioned and now opposed to French rule, he returned to London where he wrote his memoires.
