Maternità seduta - Legno - KATIELO - Sénoufo - Costa d’Avorio
Seconda metà XX secolo - Buone condizioni

The sculptures called "maternity" represent the great mother goddess Katielo or Katyelo, which can be translated as "old mother" whose children are the initiates of the cult of Poro, which takes place every seven years.
This gradual initiation makes it possible to recognize the specific characteristics of the Senoufo cultural identity.
Katyelo's role is therefore reproductive, that is, the whole universe and the Senoufo people are constantly renewed through the ceremonies of the Poro that honours it.
The other Almighty God is called Koulotiolo.

This sculpture respects the Senoufo style: oblong head, bun hairstyle. The forehead is surmounted by a calao beak that would be a kind of "third eye".
Here the body and neck are rather picked up instead of the pestle like statues with a very stretched body and neck. Katielo represents a breastfeeding woman who has to be "chubby" and has a strong chest.

Dense wood.
Dry black patina.
