This is an unusual, iron Sino Tibetan/ Chinese Touching the Earth Buddha, holding a Stupa or Pagoda.

With simple monk robes, serene face and demeanour, shell style hair, and Bhumisparsha/
Touching Earth, Mudra Hand position, he sits on a doublelotusthroneraisedon a plinth or throne; all sacred attributes representative of an iconic Buddha. Here he holds a Pagoda or Stupa. The stupa itself is a symbol of the Buddha, and more accurately, of his enlightened mind and presence. The mound itself is said to represent the form of the seated Buddha, meditating and striving towards enlightenment. Finally, the spire represents enlightenment itself, the pinnacle of Buddhist achievement. Behind him a manora has flame like motifs. At the front of the Throne two Flying Dragon like figures protect the Buddha.

Made in Iron, as Iron ( with or without Gold Gilt ) became a popular metal for Buddhist statues in the early China, as in Tibet, as Holy Statues and Ritual Objects had been traditionally made from rare Iron rich Metorites that fell or were imported into China and Tibet. They were believed to be empowered, even magical, if made from a celestial object, such as a Metorite. Iron in general became popular ( with every temple having a least one Diety cast in Iron ) and was used to ward off evil spirits, and its magnetic poperties were believed to attract benevolent and protective energy/spirits to a temple or individual.

In recent years Iron Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have been very popular in Feng Shui practices in homes as good luck statues.

This appears to be in the Han or Northern Wei Dynasty Style, and later the style of pieces from the Ming to Ching Dynasty, of Iron Buddhas. Though I paid quite a lot for it, being sold as early 20th century, i'm dating this statue from the mid to late 20th to be safe.

A wonderful Collectors piece, perfect Buddhist Altar statue, gift, or powerful interior design statement.

All my statues are are kept under Buddhist and/or Taoist conditions. All funds in excess of my costs help me to continue my activities teaching, and my Retreat.
