Marka masks are characterized by their elongated features and often pronounced eyebrows. The Marka used the masks in ceremonies to ensure a sucessful hunt or bountiful harvest.

The Marka people were a strong merchant society dominating the trade in the northwest of Mali. Nowadays there are only a few thousand Marka left who live now well intergrated next to Bambara or other ethnies in Mali.
