Rare! Set of limited edition original woodblock prints (8) - Kawase Hasui 川 瀬 巴 水 (1883-1957) - "Nippon shin hakkei" 日本 新 八景 (The New Eight Best Scenery of Japan) (complete) - Japan - ca 1927
Edmond de Goncourt admired the surimonos more than anything. Rare and precious pieces, edited in a very small number of pieces (20 to 100), they were addressed to the middle class.
Unlike prints made for the general public, the surimono's prints were not commercial but private orders, sponsored by literary and artistic circles on special occasions.
They were characterised by luxurious prints, using rare metallic pigments and outdated printing techniques: embossing, careful printing and gold and silver highlights.
Originally offered in oban format, this complete set of 8 original surimonos was edited by Bijutsusha in Tokyo (ca.1927).
All the engravings are created and signed by Kawase Hasui. Some of them contain silver highlights. The engravings are mounted on embossed paper.
