The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture. It's also a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life.
Beginning in the Heian era (794-1185), the sakura were a steadfast theme of poetry:
Yo no naka ni
taete sakura no
haru no kokoro wa
If only there were no
cherry trees in this world,
our hearts in springtime
would then perhaps
not be so aflutter.
