Biography of the artist
Despite being born in Madrid, Matilla was formed and developed his career in Barcelona. He studied Fine Arts at the Lonja de Barcelona, under the direction of Antonio Caba. He participated in numerous exhibitions, such as the International Exposition of Barcelona in 1891, 1894, 1896 and 1898 (honourable mention in 1891), the Art Exhibitions of the same city in 1918 and 1919, and the Paris Salon of 1897. That same year he obtained an honourable mention at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid. Stand out among his exhibitions, the individual ones held at the Salón Vilches in Madrid (1915) and, in Barcelona, in the Sala Parés (1914) and the Galleries Pallarés (1942), the latter a posthumous tribute. Several of his works exhibited there were purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid, and many others were exported to America. It reached great success of public and critic thanks to his landscapes of Ampurdán, Camprodón, Port de la Selva and Cadaqués.
Painter endowed with amazing ability, with an accused personality full of sensitivity, drawing and pictorial technique mastery and with overflowing capability for work, Segundo Matilla was an excellent painter who cultivated absolutely all genres, being a great landscaper and mariner, painting portraits of great quality, especially of celebrities from the world of show business, and being his vases and still lifes very appreciated. His paintings of bullfighting themes, painted with great spontaneity and full of movement, demonstrate his great fondness for the “arte de Cúchares”. He always made a totally intelligible painting without reflexive complications of any kind, ignoring absolutely all the artistic currents of his time. His work is in different museums, such as in already mentioned Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Prado Museum, Pablo Gargallo in Zaragoza and the Nacional de Arte in Catalonia, as well as in important international private collections.
